Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojna (RGMVP) is the flagship poverty reduction initiative of the RGCT.
Since
its inception in 2002, RGMVP reaches out
into some of the poorest and most deprived
areas of Uttar Pradesh to bring the poor
hope for a better future, a sense of self
worth and the means of freedom from
socio-economic oppression. Empowerment of
the poor, struggling to survive against
adverse economic and social conditions,
while achieving poverty mitigation and -
holistic development, lies at the very heart
of RGMVP’s goals. The entry-point for
RGMVP’s development initiatives is the
organisation of poor women into
microfinance-linked Self Help Groups (SHGs)
that promote thrift and livelihood
enhancement as a means to become
self-reliant. These SHGs allow RGMVP to
reach out to every household, build
capacities and social capital, and generate
a strong spirit of self-reliance and unity.
The SHGs are the first step in the formation
of Village Organisations (VOs or Gram
Sangathans) and Block Organisations (BOs or
Block Sangathans), within the framework of
the Community Institutions of the Poor (CIPs).
The CIPs are the conduits for RGMVP to
achieve social, economic and community
development objectives. Institution and
capacity building, skills training, advocacy
and networking are important tools in the
successful execution of the Programme.

RGMVP’s multi-pronged and holistic approach:

RGMVP’s community-driven, self-sustaining and
participatory development model is thus aimed at
the holistic development of the community that
facilitates the process of the poor coming out
of poverty and participating in developing
initiatives through their own efforts, supported
by institutions set up with RGMVP’s help.
